theIRapp to Collaborate with NYU Professor Michael Tang to Research Impact of Mobile Tech on Capital Markets
New York University’s Stern School of Business Professor Michael Tang will be collaborating with theIRapp, part of the theCOMMSapp (www.theCOMMSapp.com) family of apps, to research the impact of mobile investor relations technology on the capital markets and investor behavior.
The study, a first of its kind, will look at public companies that have implemented mobile strategies, particularly the use of native investor relations apps, in IR communications. It will seek to determine the impact that such technology has on the way companies communicate, the way investors make investment decisions and the overall effect that mobile technology has on stock performance and capital market behavior. Specifically, the study seeks to empirically evaluate the impact that mobile technology and IR apps may have on a company’s trading volume, stock liquidity, bid-ask spread, and analyst coverage, among others.
To date, theIRapp, a native mobile app communications technology platform, has nearly 100 subscribing companies across all industries and of all market capitalizations, including Fortune 100 and global companies located in Brazil, Australia, Israel, Canada and throughout Europe. More than 50,000 investors – institutional and retail – have downloaded the apps of subscribing public companies. Data provided to Professor Tang will be used anonymously given the proprietary nature of the information.
Professor Tang said, “Mobile technology is in its infancy as it applies to the capital markets and there is no existing research on how it is used by investors in their investment decision making processes. Changes in the regulatory environment, such as Reg FD and Sarbanes Oxley, combined with investors’ increasing demand for more and timelier information, call for innovations in the way that today’s companies communicate information to their stakeholders. Given the fast growth in mobile technology and devices, adapting investor relations to the latest technology has the potential to fundamentally affect companies’ performance in the capital markets. I have chosen to work with theIRapp because they are a leading communications app technology company with a product specifically for investor communications. theIRapp has a significant subscriber base of publically traded companies of all sizes and across a variety of industries , as well as a significant investor following. The analytical data the company possesses should prove informative to understanding how mobile technology affects investor behavior.”
Jeff Corbin, Founder and CEO of theIRapp said, “Our technology platform was created by investor relations and communications professionals who understand the importance that technology can play when it comes to public companies communicating with investors and investor decision making. In a very short period of time, many well-recognized companies have embraced the importance of implementing a mobile IR strategy and utilize theIRapp platform as a simple and cost effective way to accomplish this. With more than 50,000 downloads of our companies’ IR apps, significant data exists to understand how investors consume information via their mobile device – particularly the impact of push notifications that alert investors to important company information. We look forward to collaborating with Professor Tang of the Stern School of Business at New York University in the years to come.”
