Corporate Communications app for iPhone, iPad and Android – theCOMMSapp

Mobile MindShare April 2014

Welcome to the April edition of Mobile MindShare, the mobile trends newsletter brought to you by theCOMMSapp. It’s been an exciting month for us as we just celebrated our second anniversary launching theIRapp, our first communications industry vertical. It’s incredible to look back and reflect on the tremendous growth mobile has had in such a short period of time. Smartphone and tablet ownership has grown at lightning speeds; PC shipments continue to decline and mobile app usage has more than doubled in 2013. I hope you will view my recent vlog below as I reflect on the past two years.

As we celebrate an anniversary of one product line, we’re excited to announce the development of another. A few weeks ago we officially launched  theEMPLOYEEapp. theEMPLOYEEapp is a native app platform dedicated to internal communications. It securely integrates with an organization’s employee database and provides employers with direct access to their employees via their mobile device. Check out the Water Cooler section below to learn more.

What has us equally excited is the feedback we are receiving from our subscribers. To see what I am talking about, check out The Mobile Minute Interview with Abby Spriggs, Senior Analyst of Investor Relations from TSYS (NYSE: TSS). Abby shares her experience building a mobile IR strategy and the feedback TSYS receives from their investors and analysts.

We hope you’re enjoying Mobile MindShare and would love your input on any topics you’d like us to discuss in the future.

theCOMMSapp Unveils theEMPLOYEEapp

Many organizations are faced with similar challenges when it comes to communicating with their most important audience – their employees. As employees are increasingly dispersed and not beholden to a desk, internal communications professionals struggle to find a solution to keep employees connected and engaged.

theCOMMSapp recognized that the solution to this problem may be found as easily as looking in an employee’s pocket, purse or briefcase. It’s the common thread that ties us together; the mobile device.

As a result, theCOMMSapp developed and launched theEMPLOYEEapp. theEMPLOYEEapp is a native app platform that securely integrates with an organization’s active employee directory and allows companies to push important company information and content (documents, audio and video) to their employees.

Unlike corporate intranets and other social collaboration platforms, theEMPLOYEEapp is independent of an organization’s network and requires no systems integration. When a company subscribes to theEMPLOYEEapp, they receive three development platforms – iPhone, iPad and Android mobile devices – representing more than 90 percent of the worldwide mobile market. Most importantly, no matter where an employee is located, a company can instantaneously and simultaneously push information into the palm of their hand.

Going Mobile at SXSW

The renowned 20+ year old SXSW conference and festival took place earlier this month bringing together music, film and interactive technologies. As you’d expect, mobile was a hot topic in many of the sessions and also an integral part of the conference. Here are just a few of the mobile initiatives that took place at SXSW that we found interesting.

SXSW® GO App: The SXSW conference attracts more than 30,000 attendees making it an overwhelming task to keep events running smoothly while keeping attendees informed at the same time. As a result, the SXSW® GO App was introduced to keep attendees connected to the event and to each other. The SXSW GO App provided attendees with a conference lineup, schedule and enabled people to connect with and network with the thousands of other attendees all directly from their mobile device. It’s not only a tool that will be used during the event but one that can continue to keep attendees informed following the event.

iBeacon: According to Mobile Marketing Watch, iBeacon was the “hottest thing” at SXSW. iBeacon is a new technology that extends Location Services in iOS so that your device can alert apps when you approach or leave a location. The technology is extremely attractive as it enables you to reach your targeted audience in the right place at the right time to help guide potential purchases. Large retailers like Macy’s and American Eagle Outfitters along with Major League Baseball and the National Football League are currently testing this technology. For attendees at SXSW using iOS, downloading the event app allowed them to take advantage of iBeacon. When an attendee had the app downloaded and was in the general registration area, he or she would automatically receive a notification that had their Registration QuickCode. Pretty cool, right? Or would some consider this an invasion of privacy? It will be interesting to see how consumers react to the continued development of this new technology.

QR Codes: Although some may argue that QR codes are not engaging, they were hot commodities at SXSW, according to Mobile Marketing Watch. Mahala, an organization that allows free, secure transactions to be made anywhere over any medium, introduced its new digital commerce platform at the event, which allows consumers to purchase digital content or merchandise directly from artists, labels or merchants, using their mobile phones. Wu Music Group partnered with Mahala to launch the pre-sale of the Wu Tang Clan album, “A Better Tomorrow,” using posters with QR codes placed throughout the event promoting the new album. Consumers were able to scan Mahala’s QR codes and securely purchase items. Through Mahala’s platform Wu Music was able to provide thousands of fans a direct purchase experience. Maybe there is a future for QR codes after all?

A hotbed for innovation, companies exhibiting at SXSW continue to test the limits on how mobile can be used for marketers, communicators and consumers in general. The examples above demonstrate that apps can: 1) be a utilitarian tool to keep people connected; 2) provide customizable experiences and 3) enable consumers to access content, information, and whatever else they digitally need, on demand.
